America: Freedom to Fascism
Capsule by Jonathan Rosenbaum
Friday, July 28, 2006

Provocative but also infuriating, this alarmist documentary argues that the levying of a federal income tax in 1913 was unconstitutional and set America on the road to fascism. Filmmaker Aaron Russo (Bette Midler's former manager and the producer of Trading Places) shows no interest in the social, cultural, medical, or educational benefits of the income tax, or in the world outside the U.S., which he seems to regard as tainted by communism in the past and the international banking community in the present. He lacks the humor and polemical skill of Michael Moore as he ambushes some of his interview subjects, and he uses far too many intertitles and epigraphs. But his crude agitprop clearly identifies the threat to civil liberties posed by the Patriot Act, electronic voting, national ID cards, and implanted microchips, and his sense of urgency is contagious. Extraordinary Movie & Video Guide Review of AFTF

America: Freedom to Fascism is a documentary by Aaron Russo (produced for instance "Trading Places"), that the filmmaker thought once it will be concerned to one theme only: the federal income tax of United States and the fraud that some powerful bankers got away with (and still do). But there were some frightening surprises that Russo found out when digging up the history of tax fraud. The government of United States was becoming the totalitarian state, that reminds us of Germany when it was run by Nazis.

In fact, America: Freedom to Fascism still looks like a film that Russo had to change his point of view to story. This is also the minus point of this documentary, since every once awhile you can't help but thinking that you are watching some another film you began with. Aaron Russo luckily can glue these subjects and elements fairly smoothly: the violent ways of IRS are a prologue to telling of U.S. Government's direction to updated version of Nazi Germany. The release times of V for Vendetta and A Scanner Darkly are not circumstances. And this film is a brave way to remind, how Hitler had his power.

Daily Herald AFTF Review - 3 of 4 stars

BY DANN GIRE
Daily Herald Film Critic, Posted Friday, July 28, 2006

• Aaron Russo's "America: From Freedom to Fascism" starts out sounding like a conspiracy nut job's rant against bankers who run America, and against an illegal income tax system, and against the Federal Reserve Board, which threatens to put ID chips in our brains. Then, as Russo begins piling up the evidence with interviews and documents, his movie suddenly becomes an Orwellian horror tale about the erosions of liberty and free choice in a country founded upon those very principles.

"From Freedom to Fascism" doesn't just chart the startling attempts by the U.S. government to suppress independent thinking and dissention, it exposes a citizenry either unable or unwilling to object.

Kansas City Star AFTF Review: A taxing view of ‘America’

A taxing view of ‘America’
Is the IRS one big racket? Film makes some powerful arguments. By ROBERT W. BUTLER
Fri, Jul. 28, 2006

The filmmaker found some compatriots at a rally of IRS protesters.
By all means, approach “America: From Freedom to Fascism” with caution.

It’s a conspiracy-minded documentary from folks who think the federal income tax is a massive fraud and just one element in the move toward one world government and planetary totalitarianism.

And it works. You’ll leave Aaron Russo’s movie (opening today at the AMC Studio 30) feeling besieged, paranoid and furious.

TV Guide AFTF Review - 3 of 4 Stars

Law-abiding Americans who hand off a solid chunk of their salaries to the IRS might be interested in what filmmaker Aaron Russo has to say on the subject of income tax. According to Russo, a Hollywood producer responsible for such films as THE ROSE and TRADING PLACES, the land of the free hasn't been all that free since 1913, when the first of two frauds changed the United States forever. A handful of powerful bankers — including J.P. Morgan, Paul Warburg and John D. Rockefeller — pressured the U.S. government into passing the 16th Amendment, the so-called "income tax amendment," even though it was never legally ratified by a sufficient number of states. Why?

Entertainment Insiders AFTF Review "Show Me The Law!"

Show Me The Law!
by Jonathan W. Hickman (who happens to be a criminal defense attorney) reviewed: 2006-07-27

Ultimately, the money is the thing that gets the most attention. No matter how much President Bush tells us how important it is to light the flame of democracy in the Middle East, it is the price of gas that people will be talking about around the water cooler on Monday morning. When you talk about money, and how to keep more of it, generally, people will shut up and listen. And I hate paying Federal Income Taxes or paying any taxes for that matter. Of course, I recognize the need for some taxes. No matter how much I can't stand it, like millions of American, I file an annual return. But what if I told you that there is NO LAW requiring you to file an annual tax return? And if that were true, would you continue to "voluntarily comply?"

My guess is that if the secret were properly disclosed to the American people, the IRS would have a lot less paperwork to process on April 15th. "America: From Freedom to Fascism" makes a strong argument that every one of us ought to exercise civil disobedience and refuse to offer up a large portion of our yearly income to the Federal Government.

indieWIRE Interview: Aaron Russo, director of "America: Freedom to Fascism"

indieWIRE INTERVIEW: Aaron Russo, director of "America: Freedom to Fascism" (July 24, 2006)

Director Aaron Russo's doc "America: Freedom to Fascism" takes on the IRS, the Federal Reserve and other organizations that the film claims "have abridged the freedoms of Americans via money creation, voter fraud, the national identity card (which becomes law in May, 2008)." Through interviews, the film connects the dots on an alleged systematic erosion of civil liberties in America. Russo is probably best known for serving as producer of the 1979 film, "The Rose," directed by Mark Rydell and starring Bette Midler. In this short correspondence with iW, Russo touches on a "rumor" that eventually prompted him to make this film. Cinema Libre will open the doc in limited release beginning Friday, July 28th.

Aaron Russo responded to indieWIRE's email questionnaire, his answers to our questions are published below.

Where did you grow up and where do you currently live?

63 years-old. Making movies, was a manager [and was born in] Brooklyn, New York. I grew up on Long Island in Lawrence [and now live in] Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

NY Times: "'America: Freedom to Fascism' Makes a Mess of the Mess We Are In"

'America: Freedom to Fascism' Makes a Mess of the Mess We Are In
By NATHAN LEE Published: July 28, 2006

There are a number of problems with “America: Freedom to Fascism,” not least of which is a title so meaningless it would make Wittgenstein’s head explode.

Let us agree that “America” is a political and economic entity, and that the movie examines a little-known controversy of its operation; namely, certain ambiguities surrounding the 16th Amendment to the Constitution that have led some to argue — to the point of winning lawsuits against the I.R.S. — that there is no law requiring citizens to pay income tax.

“Freedom” is trickier, meaning one thing to President Bush and quite another to the singer George Michael. For the filmmaker Aaron Russo, freedom in America ceased to exist with the establishment of the Federal Reserve System in 1913, at which point money became an abstraction, and a shadowy cartel of bankers initiated their plans for world domination.

C|Net News.com AFTF Review by Declan McCullagh in RFID BLOG

C|Net News.com has an AFTF review today by Declan McCullagh, Chief Political Correspondent in their RFID BLOG:

Review: Aaron Russo's 'America: Freedom to Fascism'
July 28, 2006 12:12 PM PDT
In "Fahrenheit 9/11," filmmaker Michael Moore set out to show, in a not terribly favorable light, how the Bush administration responded to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

"Super Size Me" offered the same sort of wry take on the healthiness and desirability of McDonald's fast food. "Waco: The Rules of Engagement" raised troubling questions about how the FBI and Attorney General Janet Reno handled the bloody Waco, Texas, disaster.

Now Aaron Russo, a Hollywood businessman and entrepreneur, has released a political documentary that aims to turn the same kind of critical eye toward RFID (radio frequency identification) chips, the Real ID Act, the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. tax code. Russo produced "The Rose" and "Trading Places," and unsuccessfully ran for the Libertarian Party's 2004 presidential nomination.

Aaron Russo's new film, America: From Freedom to Fascism
by Brian Bogart, July 4, 2006

OH MY GOD I HAD NO IDEA!! That's what the audience is saying as they walk out of Aaron Russo's new film, America: From Freedom to Fascism. Their voices are hushed. Some faces are pale and wet with tears, sick at what they've discovered. Many are red, angry to learn for the first time that they have been robbed -- their country, their rights, and their very future have been stolen from them and their children.

But it may all end right there - all Aaron's work, all his sacrifice, his vision, the possibilities to make a real change in America, unless we pitch in and help him. Let me explain.

James Turk, Freemarket Gold & Money Report AFTF Review

From Freedom to Fascism
By: James Turk, Thursday, 29 June 2006

There is a new movie that everyone must see. It’s called AMERICA: FREEDOM TO FASCISM. This gripping, revealing documentary is produced and directed by Aaron Russo, who I am both pleased and honored to say is someone I have known for fifteen years.

This movie is guaranteed to shake things up, and rightly so. The US today is far from the Republic created by the framers of the Constitution, and the trends are not encouraging. The country is on the wrong path – foreign wars, soaring debts, and debased currency are just a few of the problems. But the most alarming trend is the decline in the rule of law.

Ain't It Cool News: Capone Is Reduced To Paranoid, Quivering Goo After AMERICA: FREEDOM TO FASCISM!!

Ain't It Cool News, Monday, July 24th, 2006 at 02:19:07 PM CST

Hey, everyone. Capone in Chicago here.

I don't mean to invoke the name of Harry Knowles in my reviews two weeks in a row, but in the same lengthy conversation in which he accused me of being too old to appreciate Lady in the Water (apparently most of America was also "too old" this past weekend), he also asked me a question I never thought another human being on this planet would ask me: "Have you seen a film called America: Freedom to Fascism?" My heart practically jumped out of my chest when he spoke these words.

Chicago AFTF Promotion "On The Street"

Last Thursday, July 20th, John Dean from Watergate fame, visited the GIANT Borders Books on North Clark street here in Chicago - located right across the street from the Landmark Theatre where Aaron Russo's film will open here in Chicago on Friday, July 28th - to promote his new book, "Conservatives Without Conscience".

Three AFTF volunteers were there, including Fred Smart, to pass out AFTF flyers will people were waiting in line to get John to sign a copy of his book during the period prior to John Dean's talk to what was a pretty packed crowd.

Paul DiGuida, one of our most aggressively persistent volunteers managed not only to share full color flyer of the movie with John, but for the remainder of the autograph session, the AFTF movie flyer remained sitting just to the left of his left arm while he signed his book for dozens of people.

Chuck Baldwin Live Reviews AFTF

My Review Of Aaron Russo's Film, "America: Freedom To Fascism"

By Chuck Baldwin July 21, 2006
Food For Thought From The Chuck Wagon

Several readers have written me asking that I promote Aaron Russo's new film. Well, until recently I had not seen it, and certainly I could not promote (or criticize) a film until I had an opportunity to view it. That opportunity presented itself a few days ago in the form of a private screening.

Most readers probably already know that Aaron Russo has enjoyed a distinguished career as a film producer winning Grammy, Tony, and Emmy awards. His films have starred people such as Bette Midler, Lionel Hampton, Eddie Murphy, Nick Nolte, Morgan Freeman, and many others. To date, Russo's films have been nominated for six Academy Awards, as well as seven Golden Globes. His films have won three Golden Globes and the Image Award. His latest film is a documentary entitled, "America: Freedom To Fascism."

NewsWithViews.com- America: "Freedom to Fascism" A Must See Movie

NewsWithViews.com - AMERICA: "FREEDOM TO FASCISM" A MUST SEE MOVIE
By Steven Yates July 10, 2006

Imagine this scenario: you call your local Pizza Palace planning to order two large pizzas with meat toppings. A female voice identifies you by your 20-digit national ID number. She mentions where you work. You ask how she knows this. “We just got wired into the system,” she says. Whatever. You place your order. Suddenly she slaps you with a $20 surcharge. Aghast, you demand, “Why?” She tells you: “Your medical records show you have high blood pressure and extremely high cholesterol.” Where’d she get my medical records? Oh, yes. The system. She says she can deliver your meat pizzas anyway because Pizza Palace has a deal with your health care provider, but you must sign a waver absolving Pizza Palace of all liability in case you drop dead (nice of them), and there’s a fee for processing the waver (swell!). Then she adds a $15 fee to deliver to your house: “You live in an orange zone—another hold-up on your street just yesterday.” News to me! You gasp at the total price: $67! “You can afford it,” the girl says, “after all, you could afford to take your wife to Hawaii last year. Those plane tickets weren’t cheap.” You nearly choke. She knows I vacationed with my wife in Hawaii??? She also knows you checked out a book at the library on how to save money vacationing at the beach, though, and can name a magazine your wife subscribes to. You’re hungry, so finally you agree to all the terms and all the fees, just to get your food. “Uh-oh, looks like you’ve maxed out all your credit cards, though. Have cash on hand, okay?”

Is this where we’re heading?

Submitted by Rob Williams on Fri, 07/14/2006 - 3:26pm.
FILM REVIEW: Connecting The Plots: “America – Freedom to Fascism”

Hollywood producer Aaron Russo is a guy who knows how to have fun, having produced such movies as “Trading Places” (featuring comedian/actor Eddie Murphy).

But his new film “America: From Freedom To Fascism” is a radical departure from such fare.

As Russo tells the story, in making his new documentary he set out on a quest to answer a question he’d heard for many years.

Namely, is there really a law requiring U.S. citizens to pay taxes on their labor?

AFTF Outreach at Chicago Peace Festival- The Lone Lantern Society

AFTF Volunteer Gary Franchi, Founder of The Lone Lantern Society and his band of Lone Lantern team members had a BIG white tent which contained laptop-driven DVD projection screenings of the AFTF trailers at a Chicago Peace Festival over this past weekend which was held in the southern end of Lincoln Park near Lake Michigan.

As you can see in the video of this operation they had a BIG projection screen and some high-power speakers. All of this was driven by some car batteries that were silently powering everything in the background across 5+ hours of the festival.

In addition to showing the AFTF trailers, Gary and crew passed out hundreds of AFTF flyers and DVDs on 9/11, it was a well oiled operation.

There are plans to take this idea into the heart of the black community on the south side of Chicago at local black festivals, barbeques, picnics, and other events. Gary said that among the people in attendance, some of the most viceral heart-soul felt reaction came from members of the African-American community.
